Fulham manager Marco Silva is a leading candidate to replace Ange Postecoglou if Tottenham Hotspur decide to make a managerial change, according to the Telegraph.
Postecoglou is under increasing pressure after Spurs lost to Fulham on Sunday. Tottenham are 14th in the Premier League with just nine games remaining.
Fulham are pushing for European qualification and have also reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they will face Crystal Palace.
However, Silva’s time at Craven Cottage could be coming to an end. His contract runs until the end of next season, and he has a reported £6 million release clause.
The former Everton and Watford boss has received high praise from one of football’s most esteemed managers, Jose Mourinho.
“He is a good young coach,” Mourinho said when Silva arrived in England (via Sky Sports). “He went to Greece. Nobody knows he was a champion there. Now he comes to the big one.”
However, while Silva has proven himself capable of overachieving with mid-table sides, his track record does not suggest he would take Tottenham to the promised land.
Tottenham need a manager who can compete with the Premier League and European elites. Simone Inzaghi of Inter Milan or Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid would be ideal.
Silva does not raise expectations. If anything, his potential appointment would reinforce the idea that Tottenham remain unwilling to break their barren cycle.
