Alan Shearer labels Chelsea “weird” as he takes swipe at the club | OneFootball

Alan Shearer has taken a swipe at Chelsea for the way their expensively assembled squad has been put together.

Chelsea’s squad has been completely revamped since the takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022, and over a £1bn has been spent on players.

The recruitment model at the club has completely changed with the Blues now focused on signing the best young talent from around Europe and the world.

Shearer takes swipe at Chelsea

There’s no doubt Chelsea have plenty of talent at their disposal, and the signing of Cole Palmer has been a revelation, whilst Moises Caicedo has shown what a top player he is.

However, a lack of experience and leadership on the pitch has really cost the Blues over the last couple of years, and Thiago Silva wasn’t replaced when he left last summer.

Chelsea’s sporting directors have come under increased pressure for what fans view as poor recruitment, although they are said to retain the full backing of the Chelsea hierarchy.

For all the money spent the Blues worryingly still lack the spine of a team, something Shearer has taken a swipe at the club over.

“I have to say they’ve spent all that money, a billion quid,” he told The Rest Is Football.

“They still haven’t got a top-class goalkeeper. They still haven’t got a top-class centre-forward. And I would say, I’m not sure about a regular centre-half either. Weird.”

Shearer’s thoughts will be shared by many Chelsea supporters and the worry is the club won’t address those issues in the summer window either.

The Blues have been strongly linked with Liam Delap, and whilst he would certainly help with their striker issues, the 22-year-old isn’t instantly going to take Chelsea to the next level.

A player like Viktor Gyokeres would do that and Chelsea are believed to be giving fresh consideration to the striker given a drop in the asking price, but only time will tell who the Blues decide to sign.
