Amorim outlines tactical plan for Manchester United | OneFootball

Ruben Amorim has suggested he will continue with his preferred system of three central defenders at Manchester United.

Amorim is set to officially begin his tenure as Manchester United manager on Monday, having been appointed as Erik ten Hag’s successor at Old Trafford.

The 39-year-old has had huge success at Sporting Lisbon, having led the club to two Primeira Liga titles during his four-and-a-half years in the Portuguese capital.

Amorim has preferred a formation with three central defenders and looks likely to continue with his chosen system in English football. Speaking following his final game in charge of Sporting at the weekend, Amorim said it’s important to start with ‘a structure that you know’.

“I know how I am going to play in the beginning, because you have to start with a structure that you know,” Amorim said after Sporting’s win at Braga.

“Then you will adapt with the players that you have, some injuries, or no injuries, what kind of players have the abilities to defend, attack, I will discover that in the next few weeks.

“We don’t have a lot of time to train, so I have to show something that I know very well. You can take whatever you want from that.”

Amorim also discussed the future of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who led the Red Devils to a four-game unbeaten run as interim manager. The Dutchman was brought in as an assistant for Ten Hag in the summer and the incoming boss said an announcement on Van Nistelrooy’s future will be made soon.

“[We’re talking] about a legend of the club. He did a great job. I have to talk with him tomorrow.

“Then I will explain everything. I am very clear and I will tell you like it is. Let’s wait until tomorrow.”
