Ange Postecoglou decided to leave Celtic in the summer of 2023, merely days after guiding the club to a domestic treble, in order to join Tottenham Hotspur. Naturally, fans were not happy but they understood the decision. The Australian had not gotten a real chance to manage in Europe until he got the Parkhead job in 2021 and at 57 years of age, he did not have a lot of time to tick things off the bucket list.
Postecoglou made a fast start at Tottenham Hotspur and it looked like he had them in a Premier League title race. But they lost their way as key players got injured.
Tottenham Hotspur have never been able to rediscover that early form since then. Right now, they are sitting at 14th in the Premier League and there are serious doubts that Postecoglou will remain in the job beyond this campaign.
As reported by The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur have made Andoni Iraola their top target to take over as head coach should they decide to part company with Postecoglou. Regardless of what happens over the next two months, there are question marks over the Australian manager's long-term future with the London club.
So, even though Postecoglou is still the Tottenham Hotspur manager, it looks like the club have a replacement already in mind. That is rarely good news for a head coach and his chances of remaining in the job.
To be honest, Tottenham Hotspur have shown a lot more patience with Postecoglou then they have with previous managers. Even ones like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
One cannot overlook their injury problems either. But this is a results-based business. And it would come as a surprise if Postecoglou is Tottenham Hotspur manager beyond this season.
