Ange Postecoglou believes Tottenham’s struggles in the Premier League have bred the resilience which helped them reach the Europa League final.

Spurs are approaching the end of a testing Premier League campaign, sitting 16th in the table with just 11 wins, but they have thrived in cup competitions, qualifying for the Europa League final after beating Bodo/Glimt on Thursday and also reaching the League Cup semi-finals earlier this year.

For Postecoglou, Tottenham’s varying fortunes have helped the team to bond.

He said: “We have had extremes this year, but one has almost caused the other. A fantastic run in the Carabao Cup has cost us in the league, but also the troubles we’ve had in the league has built a resilience in this group to be able to do what we have done now.

“You have to understand the spectrum of a disappointing league season, and at the other extreme, a really significant day in the history of this club.

“There is cause and effect there. One has affected the other. It has been an extraordinary [season] in terms of the extremes, everything we’ve gone through.”

Tottenham’s form has not been helped by torrid luck with injuries. Club captain Heung-min Son missed the crucial quarter-final second-leg win in Frankfurt and both legs of the Europa League semi-final, while fellow key players such as Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke have all endured extended absences. James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall have recently been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

For Postecoglou, the way the squad have overcome setbacks is a source of inspiration.

He continued: “People try to separate the two, but there is cause and effect there. We had a ridiculous injury-riddled season, coupled with the fact we have done really well in two competitions.

“It has felt, certainly for me personally, like a really, really long season, but you just get energy, you know? You realise what happened the other night, and you're so close to achieving something special that it all just dissipates in the background, and you get the energy you need.

“I’ve been fortunate in my career to have a but of success, but I know that the key t that is that when the opportunities come along, you take them because you don’t know when they’re gonna come around again, and the opportunity we have, that’s all you need to keep the energy levels up.”
