Sunday marks an important matchday for the Aston Villa Women. They will face a Liverpool Ladies team that is currently in sixth place at 21 points. The earlier fixture saw the club fall 2-1 under Robert de Pauw in charge at the time. Since then, Natalia Arroyo and the need to get results are only increasing.
That being said, getting points only comes from doing everything else correctly. Naturally, every team wants to win three points from each encounter. Worrying about the process that it takes to get there, however, is what matters.
With it not being until April 20th until the next game after the St. Helens visit, Sunday is an important match. There are only five unplayed WSL games left for AVWFC, and a narrow one-point lead over Crystal Palace separates them from relegation.
Speaking with the media, Arroyo gave her perspective on what she is looking for from this current group. Utilizing the remaining training time to fine-tune areas of needed improvement is critical in the battle to stay in the top flight. She disclosed, as shared by the team account on X :
"My big goal, of course, is winning, of course, is getting points and, if possible, fighting for bigger goals. But what I really enjoy every day is feeling that the players are getting better, that we are as a team not repeating the same mistakes."
It's a difficult task that Arroyo finds herself in at the moment. Having taken over during the season itself is always a challenge. She is speaking on the need for overall improvement to take place. At the same time, even if Villa were in a better position, it's clear that her approach would be the same.
Even if AVWFC were at the top of the table, there would be a need to find ways to get better in training. At this time, time doesn't afford too many more losses to come even with improvement. Arroyo and everyone in the dressing room knows what falling behind Crystal Palace would mean. Sticking to what she believes is best long-term is the only way forward.
