Arsenal and Man Utd are reportedly in the hunt to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia in the summer transfer window.
The Catalan has caught the eye with some spectacular saves this season, earning the save of the month award in February and March, making him the first player in league history to win the award in consecutive months.
Garcia was a member of the Spain U23 squad that won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris last summer. He has also made more saves than any other player in LaLiga so far in 2024/25.
The 23-year-old will be in high demand when the transfer window opens in June if the latest reports are anything to go by.
Spanish outlet AS claim that local rivals Barcelona are among the possible suitors for the shot stopper, as are Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, who may view him as a potential long-term successor to Jan Oblak. PSG and Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be in the mix.
It’s claimed that Arsenal launched a bid for Garcia last August. The Gunners offered €12 million rising to €20m, but all “parties agreed to let him stay” when it became clear a deal couldn’t be done before deadline day. The Athletic’s David Ornstein claims that Mikel Arteta wants him as a backup to David Raya.
Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim reportedly wants to recruit a new goalkeeper to supply Andre Onana with competition for the No.1 spot. Tom Heaton is also expected to retire while Turkey international Altay Bayındır may seek gametime elsewhere ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Garcia’s release clause is currently set at €25m, which rises to €30m if he were to be capped by the senior Spanish national team and decreases to €15m if Espanyol were to get relegated. Los Periquitos are currently one point above the dropzone, albeit with a game in hand on the five teams below them in the LaLiga table.
