The Gunners face The Cityzens at the Mangata Pay UK Stadium in Borehamwood this evening. The game comes just four days on from Arsenal’s 4-3 victory over Manchester City in a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture.
Despite Arsenal taking maximum points from the North West on Sunday afternoon, head coach Slegers says that her side remain grounded ahead of their latest meeting with Manchester City.
“It’s going to be a very tight game,” Slegers said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “It’s two top teams.
“We came away from Manchester winning that game, but we’re very humble with both feet on the ground. We know that City are going to come to Borehamwood and are going to want to do something different. I think they’re happy with the three goals they scored and not happy with four conceded, so I think they’ll come and change things and make it even harder for us and try to exploit us as well, so it’s going to be a hard game but we’re looking good and [staying] humble but also confident about the game.”
Arsenal are the Subway Women’s League Cup’s most successful club with seven trophy wins and Slegers says that the team are well-aware of the challenge going into their latest tie.
She said “We’re very aware of what kind of game we’re going to play and what it could mean for us, so we look forward to it. It means a lot, we want to go for trophies, so we know what the game means and we look forward to it.”
Victory would see Slegers lead Arsenal into a first cup final as head coach. While that achievement would be special on a personal level, Slegers is looking at things from a team perspective.
She said “I’m part of the team and I want the best for the team, so what it would mean for me is happiness because it would mean a spot in the final for me, but mostly for the team, for the girls and for everyone, all the staff in the background working really hard. That’s what it would mean for me as well.”
