Barcelona midfield mainstay Pedri is experiencing the best moment of his professional career at the elite level of football.

Having left his injury and fitness woes in the rearview mirror, the Spanish international is thriving this season. So far, he has participated in 35 matches, scored five goals, and provided six assists.

Hansi Flick has used Pedri as part of a double pivot in midfield, offering him continuity and showcasing great trust in him.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who recently renewed his contract with Barça until 2030, discussed his outstanding form, as well as the overall performance of his team, in an interview with EFE (h/t MARCA).

Kicking things off, Pedri talked about his new role in this Barcelona team, operating in a slightly deeper position than he used to in the past, saying:

“I really like this position because I am in constant contact with the ball, I touch the ball a lot, and the game flows through me. I feel more comfortable here and have learned how to position myself better defensively.”

Even though he is just 22 years old, Pedri is one of the team captains for Barcelona this season and is embracing the responsibility of leadership entrusted to him by Flick.

“There are many young players, and by virtue of experience, I should be one of the leaders. I like being a leader; it is a role that does not scare me in the least. I just want to take it on and try to help Barça win titles,” he noted.

One of the main factors behind Pedri’s improved performances and fitness levels this season has been the change in the way Barcelona train under the new staff.

“It does not mean that the previous training methods were wrong, but this personally suits me very well. It is a method that works better for me, and that is why I am feeling so good,” he remarked.

“I prefer to play because my body finds it harder to start after resting for one or two weeks,” the Spaniard further noted.

Shedding light on what Flick asks of him and his teammates on the pitch, Pedri stated: “To remain calm, maintain possession, and from there, generate opportunities.”

The Barcelona captain also gave an insight into the atmosphere in the Barcelona locker room currently, stating:

“We are always laughing and teasing each other, as there are many players who are under 20. We laugh a lot, and the good relationships we have off the field are reflected on the pitch.”

Pedri was also full of praise for star winger Raphinha, who is also enjoying his finest season under Flick.

“He truly deserves it, because there was a time when he was receiving criticism, not finding his best level, but you always saw him training, wanting to improve, seeking those opportunities that you knew would come because of his hard work,” he noted.

“He is now playing spectacularly,” added the Spaniard.
