FC Barcelona must be on cloud nine after their absolutely sensational victory over Benfica. It was a game where the team figuratively snatched victory from the jaws of defeat while playing away at the Portuguese club.
It was one of the worst games Barcelona have played so far under Hansi Flick. Defensively, they were all over the place, but offensively, the Catalan club displayed remarkable ruthlessness in front of goal, particularly during the second half of the game.
Adding to the joy, it has now emerged, according to Luis F. Rojo of MARCA, that FC Barcelona have reached agreements on contract renewals with two first-team stars—Ronald Araujo and Pedri—with only their signatures pending.
The report further states that the deals are expected to be announced in the coming days, once the players put pen to paper. In principle, their contracts will extend their stays at the Catalan club until 2030, with everything set to be finalized before the conclusion of the January transfer window.
Deco was seen telling Movistar ahead of the Benfica clash last night that before FC Barcelona even consider making signings this month, their priority is to renew the contracts of players already at the club to secure their top-tier talent.
It is reasonable to assume that once Barcelona finalize these deals, they will shift their focus to the contract renewals of Gavi and Lamine Yamal, both of which appear to be fairly straightforward on paper.
That said, there is one renewal that Barcelona are likely to struggle with. Frenkie de Jong’s contract also expires in 2026, and there doesn’t seem to be any apparent talks happening on that front.
However, there is always hope. If Araujo can perform a U-turn at the 11th hour, so can Frenkie. Let’s wait and see how it plays out.
