If the first half of the season belonged to Marc Casado, the second half of the current campaign belongs to another Barcelona midfielder in the form of Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman has rediscovered his best form at Barcelona after enduring a frustrating first half of the season due to recurring ankle injuries.

This has tempted Barcelona to try and tie down de Jong’s long-term future at the club. And despite initial hiccups, it appears the club have finally gotten the blessing of the player himself.

De Jong ready to renew his contract

According to a recent report from Cadena SER, de Jong’s brilliant turnaround this year has convinced the player to stay at the club long-term, with the player communicating his willingness to extend his contract with Barça.

This is a massive boost for Barcelona considering the fact that de Jong’s contract situation could cause a massive headache for the club, especially if he fails to renew his contract.

Indeed, the Catalans cannot afford to let the midfielder leave Camp Nou on a free transfer and that is where the new deal becomes important.

De Jong’s renewed importance in the team cannot be understated either. During the first half of the season, De Jong played just 362 minutes across 16 matches – only 25% of the available game time.

Since January, those numbers have skyrocketed, with the Dutchman featuring in 66% of the minutes and accumulating over 1,000 minutes in 17 games.

That said, negotiations will depend on his agent, Ali Dursun, and sporting director Deco finding common ground on a new deal. If all goes well, the Dutch maestro will be staying at the Camp Nou for years to come.
