Barcelona’s pursuit of reinforcements last summer was met with several financial roadblocks, and one of the players who slipped through their grasp was Stade Rennes’ highly-rated talent, Desire Doue, who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain.

According to reports from SPORT, after failing to secure the signing of Nico Williams, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco quickly turned his focus to the young French sensation.

However, just like with Nico, the club’s ongoing struggles with Financial Fair Play regulations meant they were unable to proceed with a concrete offer.

Deco had Desire Doue in mind

Deco had received glowing reports on Doue, identifying him as a player who could fit perfectly into Barcelona’s tactical setup. The teenager, known for his left-footed dominance, possesses remarkable dribbling ability, speed, and attacking flair.

His explosiveness and unpredictability make him a constant threat in the final third, qualities that Barcelona have always admired in their wingers.

These attributes also explain why a coach like Luis Enrique, who has a deep-rooted connection to Barcelona’s footballing philosophy, has been able to extract the best out of him at PSG this season.

A perfect player to have

From a sporting perspective, Barcelona’s management saw Doue as a player who could have significantly strengthened their squad, especially under the guidance of new head coach Hansi Flick.

However, with no financial leeway to make a move, the Catalan club had to step away from the race, leaving the door wide open for Paris Saint-Germain.

In mid-August, the French giants secured Doue’s services for €50 million, beating Bayern Munich, who were also in contention for his signature.

Had Barcelona been in a position to negotiate, they could have potentially acquired the player for a lower fee and with more flexible payment terms.

Within the club, there is little surprise at Doue’s rapid rise this season, as the technical staff were already aware of his immense potential, as in France, comparisons with Neymar are already being drawn.
