In a short time at FC Barcelona, Hansi Flick has endeared himself to the club hierarchy, the dressing room, and the fans alike.

After a disappointing season which ended with zero trophies, the German tactician has turned the Catalans’ fortunes around, with the Blaugrana well within a chance of winning a historic treble, after having already lifted the Spanish Super Cup.

Renewal talks begin

Given how happy Barcelona are with Flick, they have been eager to discuss an extension with the 60-year-old, whose current contract runs until 2026.

As such, SPORT’s Toni Juanmarti reports that a meeting took place on Tuesday between Barça’s leadership and Pini Zahavi, the agent of Flick.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta, director Deco, and other senior figures met with Zahavi, who also attended Wednesday’s quarter-final first leg in person.

The meeting marked the official starting point for discussions around renewing Flick’s contract. The Catalans are extremely satisfied with the German manager’s performance and want to reinforce their trust by agreeing an extension in the coming weeks.

The goal is to finalise the agreement before the season’s trophies are decided, as Barça see Flick as the right man to lead regardless of results.

Both sides confirmed their willingness to renew a contract but the preference is for a short-term extension – likely one additional season until 2027, potentially with an option for another year.

Importantly, both parties would retain the option to part ways amicably should circumstances change. It is also worth noting that the manager’s salary counts toward Financial Fair Play, so the new agreement cannot be officially registered until the club frees up the necessary space.

Flick and his coaching staff are currently focused solely on ending the season with as many titles as possible. They are happy in Barcelona, but everyone involved understands how quickly things can shift in football.

According to club sources, this week’s meeting was not a formal negotiation but rather a clear statement of intent – a first step before moving into detailed talks.

The formal drafting of a new deal is expected to begin in the coming weeks, though both Barça and Flick believe there will be no major obstacles in reaching an agreement.
