Barcelona president Joan Laporta has this weekend spoken out on the club’s plans for the future of Frenkie de Jong.

And it will come as little surprise to hear of the Blaugrana brass being hopeful of the Dutchman staying put for the long-term.

Midfielder De Jong has spent the last few months reestablishing himself as nothing short of an integral figure in Catalunya’s capital.

After an injury-hit opening half of the term, the former Ajax man has looked back to his brilliant best of late, playing a vital role at the base of manager Hansi Flick’s engine room.

And yet, as things stand, De Jong’s future remains far from clear.

The 28-year-old is due to see his contract terms expire in the summer of 2026, with little progress understood to have been made in talks over a new deal.

Speaking to the media this weekend, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of De Jong’s future was put to the aforementioned Joan Laporta.

And Barca’s president, during an interview with La Vanguardia (as cited by Fabrizio Romano) went on to assure:

“We’re working on renewing Frenkie de Jong’s contract. For sure he’s very excited to stay and we’re absolutely determined to do whatever it takes to ensure he stays.”
