There is no doubt that the Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has once again returned to his best level since the appointment of Hansi Flick as the head coach of FC Barcelona.
The Pole has already scored 34 goals in 39 appearances this season, and, along with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, is a part of the fearsome attacking trio that is on course to break some historical records in Europe and Spain.
He has also reached the stipulated number of games that will trigger an automatic one-year renewal, and according to recent reports, this renewal will be announced by the Catalans after the end of the upcoming international break.
However, Lewandowski is already 36 years of age, and thus, there are only a few years at best for him to keep playing at the highest level. As a result, Barcelona have been linked with several exciting strikers as they look for a long-term replacement for the Pole.
In such a context, Mundo Deportivo reports that the Canadian striker Jonathan David is still on the Catalan club’s list of candidates for this role and his candidacy might have received a boost after scoring and assisting in Lille’s Round of 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund.
This season, the 25-year-old Canadian striker has already scored 23 goals and provided 10 assists in 40 appearances, and he remains the leading attacker for his side in both Ligue 1 and the UCL, even though his campaign in the latter competition has ended.
He was particularly good in the second leg of the tie against Borussia Dortmund, as he created most of the chances for his team. In the UCL, he scored 7 goals in 10 matches, and his victims included some of the biggest teams in Europe, including Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund.
There are several big European clubs interested in his signing, including the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, West Ham United, Juventus, and Inter Milan, as his contract ends at the end of this season and he is going to leave Lille this summer.
However, Barcelona have an edge over these sides as the player himself recently admitted that he used to support the Blaugrana side as a kid and that playing there was a dream for him. Still, with Lewandowski’s renewal, it remains to be seen whether the Catalans will make a push for his signing.
