Last week, Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the signing of Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich, with an option to buy in the summer – should Spurs and the player agree to make the move permanent.

The problem for Tel is that he did not fit a Vincent Kompany side. He was never going to play up front over Harry Kane, and Kompany uses touchline wingers – something that the Frenchman is not. If he is going to play out wide, it needs to be as an inside forward, with the license to come inside and combine with players in central areas.

So, something that could be a concern is that Ange also uses touchline wingers. Will Tel fit into that sort of system? Let’s take a look.

Assessing how Mathys Tel may tactically fit in at Tottenham Hotspur

Though Spurs generally use their wingers high and wide, Ange has slightly tweaked the system recently, using his usual inverted full-backs a bit more traditionally, and the wingers playing inside a little bit more.

Also, for a right-footed player like Tel, playing wide (or somewhat wide) on the right-hand side may suit him. Albeit in a more traditional Thomas Tuchel system, the 19-year-old scored playing off the right against Darmstadt and Union Berlin.

Furthermore, strikers Dominic Solanke and Richarlison are currently injured, so he should get a chance as a striker for the time being. It will just be about whether or not he gets service. He won’t have players such as Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane, and Joshua Kimmich to create for him.

Off the left, despite not having his best season, Heung-Min Son has been very creative this season. In midfield, Dejan Kulusevski has also been putting up good creative numbers this season. Those two will be the key for Tel to link up with, which might even be the front three for now.

When Solanke is fit, the front three are likely to be (R/L), Tel, Solanke, Son. Then, Kulusevski can play in midfield, and perhaps James Maddison too. That would certainly be enough creativity for him.

To go back to Solanke for a moment, the striker has shown on a number of occasions this season that he has elite link up play, similarly to Kane. This will be great for Tel when he tries to move inside and get chances in central areas.
