On Wednesday, courtesy of a brace from Harry Kane and a poacher’s finish from Jamal Musiala sandwiched in between, Bayern Munich defeated arch-domestic rivals Bayer Leverkusen rather comfortably in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 clash by a score of 3-0.

Before Wednesday, most pundits had picked Bayer Leverkusen as the team to prevail over the two legs. Regardless, considering the fact that only one goal had been scored in three previous meetings between the two sides so far this season, the margin of victory for the Bavarian giants was somewhat surprising.

Following the 3-0 win at the Allianz Arena, the tables have now turned, and it would be a major shock if Leverkusen were to somehow advance to the next round of the competition. With the first leg out of the way, let’s look at some key takeaways from Bayern’s victory against the reigning Bundesliga Champions.

Statement win

Wednesday’s game was definitely a must-win game. Despite holding an eight-point lead over Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga table, as previously alluded to, most experts had written off Bayern over the two-legged tie.

The team responded well to the negativity and delivered a professional performance to record what some critics may consider their first victory of this season against a true title contender. Vincent Kompany deserves credit for his first victory in four attempts over Xabi Alonso’s men. Courtesy of the 3-0 victory, the dream of lifting the Champions League trophy at the Allianz Arena on May 31 remains alive.
