BBC reporter details why Chelsea are confident of Champions League qualification, fans likely to be divided | OneFootball

There’s a feeling within Chelsea the club can move up the table and qualify for the Champions League once players return from injury according to reports.

The Blues started the season so well under Enzo Maresca, and were second in December and found themselves in the title race conversation.

However, since Christmas things have taken a turn and following their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, Chelsea are now on a run of two wins in their last ten league games.

Chelsea feel they can still qualify for the Champions League

Maresca’s men are in a slump that they need to arrest immediately, with the visit of Southampton on Tuesday night as close to a guaranteed three points you can get these days.

The Blues have slipped to seventh in the league following results over the weekend, but somehow they are still only a point outside the top four.

Chelsea can’t afford to go a third consecutive season without Champions League football, and after insisting that wasn’t the target this season, Maresca has changed his tune and admitted it is.

John Obi Mikel has claimed it would be a disaster to miss out again, and Chelsea are facing an uphill battle given the crisis of confidence in the squad, and the current injury situation.

The likes of Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke and Wesley Fofana are due back after the international break which will be a big boost for the Italian.

BBC Journalist Nizaar Kinsella has reported there’s a feeling within the club that if the team stick together and when players return from injury, they can move up the league and qualify for the Champions League.
