Manchester United are hoping to offload Antony, but his lucrative contract at Old Trafford could derail his transfer to Real Betis.

The 24-year-old was signed in the summer of 2022 for a whopping £86 million, as his old Ajax boss Erik ten Hag was keen on a reunion at Old Trafford. Despite failing to replicate the sort of inspired displays that earned him fame during his time in Amsterdam, the Brazilian still maintained a place in the Dutch manager’s plans at the expense of Amad Diallo.

But with Ten Hag now out of the club, many expect Antony to follow suit, especially after finding limited space in Ruben Amorin’s 3-4-2-1 formation. The Portuguese has rightfully given the nod to Amad on the right wing, and the latter has made this spot his own, thus keeping the Brazil international on the bench.

In recent weeks, Real Betis have been leading the race to sign Antony in January, even though West Ham United and Olympique Marseille have also been mentioned as alternative destinations.

But while many sources had suggested the Andalusians are close to sealing a deal with United, TalkSPORT reveals that major obstacle that could scupper the whole operation.

Disappointed Antony looking on

As the source explains, the flamboyant winger currently earns around £200,000 every week (despite his limited contributions). Obviously, the Spanish club doesn’t possess the means to cover this figure which is way outside its financial parameters.

Hence, Betis have asked United to cover more than half of the player’s wages, otherwise, they won’t be able to go through with the deal.

The report claims the Red Devils are currently reflecting on the matter, hoping for the emergence of another suitor – one capable of offering more tempting terms – before making a final decision on Betis’ request.
