Matchday 23 in the Bundesliga saw 6-0 thumpings, the race for Europe get even tighter, and a somewhat injury-struck Bayern Munich move closer to regaining the Meisterschale. Here is your recap and talking points from matchday 23 in the Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund got their first Bundesliga win under new head coach Niko Kovač in emphatic style but hitting a woeful Union Berlin for six.
It was a much-needed win for BVB as they look to make ground and get into any form of European competition next season. The match itself belonged to Serhou Guirassay who got four of Dortmund’s goals – the last three goals all coming within eight minutes of one another as Union well and truly collapsed towards the final whistle.
There was also a much-needed goal and assist for summer signing Maximilian Beier in the 89th minute. Just his 5th goal of the campaign, Dortmund will be hoping that this will give him a confidence boost.
Perhaps a good omen for BVB fans, every time Beier has scored for Dortmund in the league this season, they haven’t lost.
Despite the win, Dortmund stay in 10th on 32 points but crucially the gap between themselves and 6th is now just six points.
RB Leipzig’s 2-2 draw to strugglers FC Hiedenheim on Sunday has opened the door for other teams chasing Champions League football.
The Saxons found themselves 0-2 down just 13 minutes in against Frank Schmidt’s side. It was a lightning start from FCH, who had just come off the back of a 120-minute match against FC Copenhagen and European heartbreak on Thursday evening.
Loïs Openda pulled one back just before half time as the bulls went on the chase. After a lengthy VAR check and referee stadium announcement, Leipzig were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute – Benjamin Šeško converted to make it 2-2.
The Saxons couldn’t find a winner meaning it’s now four draws and one win in their last five Bundesliga matches.
The draw means Leipzig slip from 4th to 6th and open the fourth Champions League spot wide open.
Currently, just three points separate 4th-7th position.
Despite Harry Kane starting on the bench and Dayot Upamecano missing through injury, Bayern put in a dominant display to breeze past Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 on Sunday.
Bayern finally made the breakthrough via Micheal Olise just before the break – his 7th Bundesliga goal of the season.
Second-half goals followed from Hiroki Ito, Jamal Musiala, and Serge Gnabry. A special moment for Ito personally, who has only just come back from a long-term injury and is now getting regular playing time again. His close-range volley from a corner was his first goal for Bayern.
The goal of the night, however, belonged to Musiala. Picking the ball up in his own half, he took on the whole Frankfurt defence before slotting it home – a truly magnificent solo goal from a generation talent.
There was one negative as Joshua Kimmich was forced off due to injury.
“Jo [Kimmich] went into the game already carrying an injury,” Eberl noted when speaking on Kimmich. “He’s currently undergoing tests, so I can’t say anything yet. I hope it’s nothing serious, but you never know. He [Kimmich] isn’t one to leave the pitch voluntarily.“
The win keeps Bayern 8 points clear at the summit with 11 games to play.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, SC Freiburg move up to 4th with a 5-0 win against Werder Bremen. Julian Schuster’s side have now won four Bundesliga games in a row at a time when other European hopefuls around them have been dropping points. Should Schuster’s side finish 4th this season, it will be a phenomenal achievement.
