Paul Scholes has voiced his stance on the prospect of Manchester United selling Alejandro Garnacho.

It comes after the club reportedly rebuffed a £40 million bid from Napoli for the 20-year-old today, with INEOS keen to earn around £60m if they were to facilitate his departure.

Even if a substantial offer arrived, you’d imagine it’d have to be sooner rather than later in the window, as a replacement would be necessary to ensure Ruben Amorim isn’t left too short of options – especially considering Marcus Rashford looks all but certain to be on his way out.

As well as Garnacho, United could have their hand reluctantly forced into potentially selling Kobbie Mainoo amid INEOS’ attempts to stay within the league’s financial limitations; offloading homegrown talents, whose sales would generate pure profit, is often the route clubs have to take.

The England international, 19, is said to be being monitored by Chelsea, who are waiting in the wings to gauge his availability after Mainoo’s contract talks hit a standstill due to wage demands.

He is tied to Old Trafford until 2027, plus the option of an additional year, while Garnacho’s extension in April 2023 ensured his future was mostly in United’s control until 2028.

Reacting to recent speculation ahead of tonight’s clash with Southampton on TNT Sports, Scholes told the panel: “United can probably get better than Garnacho. Although he’s young, and there’s more to come, he’s scruffy in his technique at times, and his decision-making at times is really poor. I wouldn’t be worried if they sold him. But Mainoo, I’ll be offended by that.”

It remains to be seen if Serie A leaders Napoli will return with an improved proposal when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia‘s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain is completed in the coming days.
