Celtic are expected to strengthen the squad in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Hoops might be closing in on a treble again, but as the back-to-back defeats at the hands of the Rangers have proven, there is still room and need for improvement. Hopefully, the right additions will be made while the core of the team is kept in place at the same time.

If recent rumours are anything to go by then it looks like Celtic are aiming to bring in a defensive midfielder this summer. That is a position where they have struggled to find a long-term solution for a long time.

The club have had players like Ismaila Soro, Oliver Abildgaard and Tomoki Iwata in recent years. None of them were successful in establishing themselves as regular starters though. And it is not hard to understand why that was the case.

In most domestic games, Celtic do not even need a traditional defensive midfielder as they are on the other front foot the majority of the time, with the opposition happy to sit back and play for a draw. But that has not stopped them from being linked with a Bundesliga veteran.

As reported by Augsburger Allgemeine, Celtic and Besiktas are mentioned as potential suitors for Elvis Rexhbecaj, and several top Greek clubs are also said to be monitoring him. His contract expires in 2026, and talks about a possible extension appear to have stalled. The Kosovo international seems to have started to think twice.

It is worth pointing out that Rexhbecaj has spent his entire career in the Bundesliga. He has played for teams like FC Augsburg, Wolfsburg, Cologne and Bochum, making 179 appearances in the Germany's top league.

It remains to be seen if he indeed decides to leave Augsburg or not. If he does, will Celtic make a move?
