Chelsea are not looking to part ways with midfielder Enzo Fernandez this summer, according to Football London. Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing the Argentine, but the Blues have no intentions of letting him leave Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea expect Fernandez to remain in West London for a long time. He has a deal that runs until 2032, and Madrid cannot easily pry him from their hands.
It is easy to see why Los Blancos are after Fernandez, who has been in sparkling form this season. The Chelsea maestro is the kind of controller Madrid miss in their engine room following the departure of Toni Kroos.
Fernandez is enjoying his most productive spell at Chelsea since joining from Benfica in January 2023 for £106 million. He has recorded five goals and nine assists in 33 appearances this term.
The 24-year-old looks fitter and sharper. Despite Fernandez’s little grasp of English, his influence as a leader is showing. Chelsea will do everything within their power to keep him from the grasp of Real Madrid.
However, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca will have to make some tough decisions regarding the midfield next season.
Even with Fernandez’s improved form, they still look light in the engine room, especially in a 4-2-3-1 setup, and that could be solved by adding another midfielder of a different profile and switching to a 4-3-3.
Consequently, Cole Palmer may have to move back to the right flank, where he may not be as influential as when he takes up the No. 10 role. But it is worth noting that he was equally outstanding on the right under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Adding a box-to-box, goalscoring midfielder with a decent engine could strengthen Chelsea through the middle.
It also leaves more room for returning stars like Carney Chukwuemeka, Andrey Santos and Lesley Ugochukwu to shine. It is something for Maresca to consider ahead of next season.
