Corinthians hit by key forward blow ahead of Copa do Brasil decider

Memphis Depay is set to miss Corinthians' crucial Copa do Brasil clash against Novorizontino as he continues to recover from a ligament issue in his right ankle. The forward has undertaken an intensive rehabilitation routine, splitting his recovery between multiple daily sessions at the club’s Joaquim Grava training centre and additional work at home. Despite this around-the-clock approach, the likelihood of Depay returning for Wednesday’s second-leg tie at the Neo Química Arena remains slim.
Depay sustained the injury last Tuesday, and while the severity—marked by significant swelling—initially raised concerns, surgery has been ruled out in favour of relentless physiotherapy. Corinthians’ medical staff have focused on reducing swelling and restoring mobility, but progress has been measured. According to manager Dorival Júnior, Depay has shown noticeable commitment and effort during his recovery. “He had a strong twisting of the ankle, a lot of swelling—even absurd. Maybe later this week we can start some on-pitch work. He’s trying to accelerate as much as possible—today it was less swollen,” Dorival explained.
Depay’s absence is a blow for Corinthians’ attacking options. He was already unavailable for Sunday’s 1-0 league win over Santos, missing alongside playmaker Rodrigo Garro. In his stead, the team leaned on tactical adjustments and contributions from others to edge the São Paulo rivals. Now, with progression to the Copa do Brasil last 16 at stake following a 1-0 win in the first leg away to Novorizontino, Dorival will likely need to adapt once more.
Depay is aiming to be fit for Corinthians’ next Brasileirão fixture against Atlético-MG on Saturday. Club staff remain cautious but hope that, barring setbacks in his rehabilitation, the Dutchman could be available for selection by then.
Further complicating Dorival’s plans are additional fitness concerns. Right-back Matheuzinho missed the Santos fixture due to a thigh problem and may also be absent midweek. Meanwhile, Garro’s return from injury is progressing, with expectations that he will rejoin full training later in the month.
Corinthians need only a draw at home to secure their place in the next round of the Copa do Brasil. But with squad depth tested once again, all eyes remain on how the side manages without several first-choice players as decisive fixtures come thick and fast.
