In a league known for its rising stars and international flair, few players have made an entrance as thunderous as Hirving âChuckyâ Lozano.
The Mexican winger, San Diego FCâs marquee signing for their inaugural Major League Soccer season, has wasted no time living up to the hype â and then some.
The 29-year-old attacker, who joined the expansion side as their first Designated Player, has taken MLS by storm. Through just 639 minutes on the field â just over seven full matches â Lozano has racked up an impressive four goals and six assists. Thatâs a goal contribution every 64 minutes, a staggering rate that places him among the leagueâs elite.
By Matchday 11, Lozano had firmly established himself as San Diegoâs talisman. His 10 combined goals and assists not only lead the club but also place him among just three players in MLS to hit double digits this early in the season. Only San Joseâs Cristian Espinoza (11) and Portlandâs Antony (10) share that honor.
Together with Danish winger Anders Dreyer, who boasts nine contributions, Lozano forms one of the leagueâs most potent attacking duos. They join the San Jose tandem of Espinoza and Chicho Arango as the only teammate pairings with at least nine goal involvements each â a rare feat for an expansion side.
Matchday 11 was a statement performance from Lozano, who delivered a first-half brace with goals in the 20th and 27th minutes in a 5-0 thrashing of FC Dallas. With that, he became just the fifth player in MLS history to tally at least four goals and four assists in his first eight appearances for an expansion club.
Later in the same game he added two assists, becoming only the fourth player ever to notch two goals and two assists in a single match for a debut-season expansion team. The last to do so? None other than fellow Mexican star Carlos Vela in 2018.
Lozanoâs impact isnât just being felt in San Diego â itâs echoing all the way to the offices of the Mexican national team. After last appearing for El Tri in a 2-0 loss to the United States in the 2024 CONCACAF Nations League Final, Lozano is now pushing hard for a return ahead of this summerâs Gold Cup.
âIâm always trying to contribute to the team,â Lozano told Fox Sports. âRegarding the national team, as Iâve said before, Iâm available and would be very happy to return. I just have to keep working to be in the best shape possible.â
With his current form, a return to the national setup may be more a matter of when than if. For now, San Diego fans are enjoying every electrifying minute of âChuckyâsâ journey â one thatâs quickly becoming one of the most thrilling stories in MLSâs 2025 campaign.
