Rams interim boss Matt Hanshaw has admitted he would like to stay at Pride Park when a new man is appointed.
Interim Derby County manager Matt Hamshaw has admitted that he wants to be a part of the coaching staff of Paul Warne's successor whenever they are appointed.
A late Jerry Yates penalty earned Derby a point away at Norwich City on Saturday, halting their run of seven consecutive losses in the Championship.
That run of form prior to a trip to Carrow Road was enough to convince chairman David Clowes that previous manager Paul Warne was no longer the right man for the job, but with the East Midlands outfit now inside the bottom three, the new man in charge will face a difficult assignment whenever the appointment comes.
According to The Telegraph’s John Percy, the Rams have outlined former player John Eustace as their main target.
But with Eustace leading Blackburn Rovers into genuine play-off contention and doing a superb job at present, it remains to be seen whether the 45-year-old would take a massive risk in departing Ewood Park for pastures new - especially to a club in relegation danger.
Despite the links with the Rovers chief, Hamshaw, who was brought to the club by Warne in September 2022 and has been an assistant to him since 2016, has stated that he wishes to remain at the club whenever a new man is appointed.
Speaking after the draw with Norwich, Hamshaw said: “I’d like to stay.
"The club’s been amazing and I’ve really enjoyed my time here. These couple of months have been really tough, obviously for a number of reasons. One is that we probably haven’t had the players available that we wanted.
“Today (Saturday), I had really good options, and we’d had a really good week in training. I think that will stand the squad - whether it’s me Tuesday or another manager Tuesday - in good stead moving forward.
“Whichever manager comes in, he's working with good players, he's got good options and it's a top job anyway without having the players available that we've now got.
"I'm sure there'll be a number of candidates who want this position, and like I say, the club has been really good to me and all four of us.
"Hopefully, in some capacity, Andy Warrington (the goalkeeping coach) and myself can stay. If that isn't the case, then look, I have no regrets. I won't say anything bad about the club. They've really looked after us.”
With Derby now fighting for their lives at the foot of the Championship table, every point will matter to them between now and the end of the season.
If they are to retain their Championship status at the end of the campaign, the Rams may well look back at their Carrow Road draw as a key turning point of their season.
It’s been tough to see where their next point would come from over the last few weeks and, while at the minute it is nothing more than a single point, it could go a long way to bringing some positivity and belief back among the squad and the fanbase.
With the likes of Oxford, Preston, Luton and Stoke all still to visit Pride Park between now and the season’s close, Derby will have plenty of opportunities to pick up points, which would likely be even more important if they came against some of their fellow strugglers.
If they can find a repeat of anything close to their early season form that saw them win three of the first five games of their Championship return, it could be enough to ensure the Rams remain a second tier club next season.
