Bayern Munich have confirmed that Alphonso Davies will be sidelined for several months after suffering a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee while on international duty with Canada.
The 24-year-old sustained the injury early in Canada’s 2-1 win over the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place match.
He was substituted after just 12 minutes, having gone down twice and receiving treatment before limping off.
Bayern have announced that Davies will undergo surgery today and is not expected to return until next season. His absence is a major blow during a crucial period for the club.
The German champions have also confirmed that Dayot Upamecano will be out for several weeks after being diagnosed with loose bodies in his left knee.
The French defender featured in France’s Nations League quarter-final win over Croatia before returning to Bayern with the issue.
“Unfortunately, there’s always the risk of players returning from international breaks with injuries – this time, we’ve been hit particularly hard,” Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said.
“The absence of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano weighs heavily on Bayern. Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his road to recovery.
“We’ll also be keeping a close eye on Upa in the coming weeks and expect him to be available again soon.
“We have a strong squad and will compensate for these absences. We’ll now grow even closer together. The quality is there to continue pursuing our big goals.”
Davies has struggled with fitness issues this season. He missed six matches after sustaining a hamstring strain in Bayern’s 3-0 Champions League defeat to Feyenoord in January.
He was also absent for Canada’s Nations League quarter-final against Suriname due to fatigue.
Despite these setbacks, he has remained an important figure for Bayern, tallying three goals and three assists in 31 appearances.
His absence leaves Bayern with a significant void at left-back as they continue their pursuit of silverware in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
