England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that her side will not be out for revenge when they face Spain in a UEFA Women’s Nations League fixture at Wembley on Wednesday evening.

The Lionesses were defeated 1-0 by Spain in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final back in 2023. The two nations will now meet for the first time since contesting that showpiece.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, England boss Wiegman said that revenge is something that isn’t on the agenda.

“No, I don’t see it as revenge, I just see it as another game,” Wiegman said. “That final was the final and of course, we were disappointed that we didn’t win it but you move on. This is the next game, we want to play our best, be very competitive and win this game.”

Spain have conceded four goals in their last two matches and Wiegman has identified areas where England can hurt the world champions.

She said “They’re very comfortable on the ball and they want to play a possession game. We are aware of that, so at moments, we will have to be patient and wait until we can press and win the ball but we also know that we can exploit space behind them and that’s what we are looking for. They’ve been struggling with that over the last couple of games.

“They’re a good side but we see opportunities too.”

Both teams have changed since their last meeting in August 2023 and Wiegman says that comparisons cannot necessarily be made with previous sides and achievements.

She said “I think we have evolved but you can’t relate to the EUROs or the World Cup anymore because there have been so many new players coming in. The game has evolved too, it’s not just us trying to adapt, the opponents have changed with the Nations League coming in, different matches at a much higher level which is what we want.

“Of course, we are still developing, adapting and trying to improve every single game.”
