Chelsea are playing on Monday night this week, meaning they have a little more time to prepare than most teams – and it sounds like they’ll need it.
The Blues have just had their pre-match press conference at Cobham looking ahead to the Wolves game, and Enzo Maresca had a pretty negative wave of news to drop on the team news front. Cole Palmer was seen limping pretty heavily in the game against Bournemouth earlier this week, and for a while it looked very likely he was going to come off at half time.
He soldiered on to the end but didn’t look himself (excluding his brilliant goal which happened before the injury). His perseverance seems to have cost him though, as he’s not been training since, according to Maresca:
“Cole is a doubt, he was not in the session today. Levi was not in the session, Romeo and Enzo were not involved. Cole didn’t train today, we don’t know if he will train in the two days.”
So Palmer is not necessarily ruled out, but he may be going into the Monday game after almost a week without a session. It’s hard to see Maresca risking him under those conditions, no matter how much his team need a win. Putting Palmer on the bench and trusting Joao Felix or Christopher Nkunku would seem sensible.
Romeo Lavia lies stricken after a blow to the head.
We don’t know what the issues with the other 3 are – presumably and hopefully minor, but clearly significant enough to keep them out of training and for Maresca to mention them.
Romeo Lavia is hopefully just being rested after featuring in two games in a week, but he went straight down the tunnel after his removal this week. Levi Colwill also appeared to pick up a knock on Tuesday but played on. With Enzo we’ve got no idea – hopefully it’s not bad, we can’t afford to have him and Lavia missing at the same time.
