While there are whispers about Rangers finding a new CEO and Chairman and announcing it imminently, there is one main name that is floating around connected with a big role at Ibrox.

Former Rangers defender Carlos Bocanegra, labelled an ‘executive’ in football these days following a major stint in the MLS with Atlanta United as Technical Director and Vice President, not to mention being a chairman with the Technical Development Committee of American Soccer, is the big name being touted with a gig in Govan.

So he is clearly extremely experienced in the executive roles in football, and from his stint at Rangers both in the Scottish Premiership and briefly in the lower leagues, Boca definitely understands the pressures and demands of the club for sure.

In terms of him as a CEO or Sporting Director, he does seem to tick a few boxes. He was well-respected at Atlanta and the post-playing career he’s had.

But is he the right call?

Ibrox Noise still has a slightly bitter taste in the mouth after Boca’s exit all those 12 years ago, whereby the club had to pay a portion of his remaining contract off to secure a ‘mutual consent’ – instead of just accepting the club had no money, Boca demanded to leave, and equally demanded that pay off of some of his contract.

This was pure self-interest, which if the club was in a good financial place at the time we’d barely note it – but this was right during the TUPE era and the refusal of a lot of players to help the club by transferring their contracts.

It should be clarified, like fellow defender Dorin Goian Boca did transfer his deal, as did Lee McCulloch, Neil Alexander and Lee Wallace to name but three.

But he had no intention of sticking around – and in fact used his contract to make money out of Rangers. The rest at least left without costing Rangers anything.

Unless, that is, Boca is the one ‘mutual consent’ in history where a sportsman didn’t get a payoff. Probably not. Goian was the same – got mutual consent and a payoff.

So we will never be overly happy about that.

But that’s history we suppose, and we definitely need someone with nous and knowhow in the role, someone who knows and gets Rangers too.

If it’s to be Boca, we’ll see how he gets on.
