With the international break chuntering into life, with another dull fortnight ahead, it’s a nice chance to look back at the season so far – especially with 25% of the league campaign now passed.
One player who was really picked out for praise at the weekend was Wesley Fofana, who put in a dominant showing for Chelsea at the back and had many fans falling over themselves to say he had played his best game for the Blues yet as we faced off with Mikel Arteta’s fearsome duel monsters at Stamford Bridge.
After three seasons of the last 4 were almost entirely wiped out due to injury, we always expected it would take a while for Fofana to get back to his best, and it’s been a slow process.
He’s missed just one game in the Premier League this season, when he was suspended against Liverpool, and has otherwise been an ever present, gradually improving and looking a hell of a lot better than his worryingly wobbly showings in the preseason friendlies in the summer.

WhoScored have him down as the 20th best central defender in the league, and if his improvements continue he will climb that list rapidly, especially as his understanding with Levi Colwill grows.
If Enzo Maresca wasn’t insisting on his slightly odd offside line, Fofana might have an even better rating. In any case, after pulling out of the France squad he now has two weeks to rest and recover at base, and hopefully get yet more good training time in to keep up the improvement.
If we want to win anything this season, we will need the former Leicester man to keep playing at a super high level all the way until May.
