In a current update shared by way of MARCA, it has come to light that FIFA has never considered inviting Barcelona for participation in the upcoming Club World Cup, despite developing speculation in recent days.

The rumours began swirling after Mexico’s Club Leon were suspended from the competition, prompting suggestions that FIFA could possibly extend a proper invitation to Barcelona as a substitute.

Given the Catalan club’s marvellous form this season—leading La Liga, reaching the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, and making it to the Champions League semi-finals—many believed they could be a natural choice.

However, for now, these hopes have been dampened.

And why is that?

This is because although Club Leon have been sanctioned, they have appealed the suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and until a definitive verdict is revealed, FIFA is not exploring any options.

This update might also come as a disappointment to the fans who were given a ray of hope as they saw Barcelona as a worthy addition to the newly expanded Club World Cup format.

The club is enjoying one of its most competitive campaigns in recent years and could very well finish the season with a historic treble under new manager Hansi Flick.

Nothing in favour of Barcelona

Nevertheless, FIFA appears to be proceeding cautiously, giving Club Leon the benefit of the legal process before considering any replacements.

Until the CAS ruling decisively removes the Mexican club from the competition and FIFA decides to explore other options, Barcelona will not be involved in the Club World Cup.

For now, despite their elite performances and strong European pedigree, Barcelona will have to focus on finishing the season strongly across the three competitions they remain involved in, rather than banking on a surprise invitation to the global tournament.
