Five Premier League players set for international debuts this month

Morgan Rogers – Aston Villa

The calls for Morgan Rogers to be involved with England have been answered, with the midfielder a late selection following multiple withdrawals. Rogers has started the season in brilliant form for Aston Villa, emerging as a central figure in Unai Emery’s side. A surprise signing from Middlesbrough last January, the 22-year-old has started to fulfil his potential at Villa Park.

He has three goals and two assists in the Premier League this season, while only AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has completed more successful take-ons in the Champions League. His combination of delicate footwork and broad physique have made Rogers a fan favourite and he will be desperate to prove he belongs at this level. Unai Emery said the midfielder was too good for u-21 level earlier this season. He now has the chance to prove it.

Mads Roerslev – Brentford

Mads Roerslev’s consistent performances for Brentford have been recognised with another international call-up for Denmark.

The right-back has been an unused substitute on each occasion previously but will be hoping to debut when the Danes face Spain and Serbia this month. Roerslev has been handed his chance following an injury to Joachim Maehle and joins club teammates Christian Norgaard and Mikkel Damsgaard in the squad.

Leicester City goalkeeper Mads Hermansen is also hoping for a Denmark debut.

Curtis Jones – Liverpool

Curtis Jones is back in the England squad after withdrawing to attend the birth of his first child last month. Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes becoming a father has brought the best out in Jones, who has produced a string of strong showings for the Reds of late.

“When he has the ball he is never afraid to do something special with it,” the Dutchman said.

“Sometimes that has led to a situation where, in my opinion, he touches the ball too much as he’s a bit over-confident. But confidence is an important tool. He combines this at the moment with an incredibly hard work rate and we can trust him in defence.”

Interim manager Lee Carsley is a big fan of the 24-year-old, having worked with Jones at u-21 level. He has called the midfielder ‘one of the best players I have worked with in terms of his ability’.

Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall could also debut for England this month.

Stefan Ortega – Manchester City

For the first time in a long time, there’s an opening in the Germany goal. Manuel Neuer’s retirement and Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s season-ending injury has left Julian Nagelsmann in search of a new stopper.

It’s led to a first call-up for Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, recognised as one of the best back-ups in the Premier League. The 32-year-old has performed admirably when called upon by Pep Guardiola and will challenge Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nubel – each of whom have just one cap – for a place this month.

Murillo – Nottingham Forest

Murillo’s outstanding displays for Nottingham Forest have led to a maiden Brazil call-up this month.

The 22-year-old has impressed in a Forest side flying high under Nuno Espirito Santo, sitting fifth in the Premier League table. Murillo has formed an excellent understanding with summer signing Nikola Milenkovic, with only Liverpool having conceded fewer goals in the Premier League this season.

With Eder Militao and Bremer sidelined with ACL injuries, there’s a chance to stake his claim with the Selecao.
