Manchester United’s disappointing 0-0 draw means they remain outside the top-10 after five games, thereby heaping more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

The FA Cup win meant INEOS ended up backing him despite a disastrous season but an uptick in performance will mean nothing to them if results do not United’s way soon.

They have missed the most big chances in the league and with huge league games against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa coming up, the Dutchman will need to spark a turnaround if he wants to keep his job.

There have already been murmurs of the new co-owners talking with potential replacements like Max Allegri, Simone Inzaghi and now, Givemesport have thrown a familiar name into the mix.

Southgate once again in the fray

Gareth Southgate, who was heavily linked with Old Trafford hotseat during INEOS’ end-of-season review, is currently a free agent after leaving the England job.

Under him, The Three Lions reached back-to-back Euro finals as well as a World Cup semifinal but they have consistently failed to get over the line despite boasting of some of the world’s best current players.

But the 54-year-old is liked by sporting director Dan Ashworth and INEOS head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford and that could potentially do the trick for the former Middlesbrough boss.

However, Everton are also eyeing the former England boss and while United fans would prefer to see Southgate join the Merseyside outfit, the former England international wants to wait for United to come calling.

The Toffees are in the middle of a relegation dogfight having not won a game so far and Southgate could avoid such a project in favour of moving to one of the established top sides.

“Everton are understood to be admirers of Southgate, GMS sources have been informed that their managerial target would prefer to wait for the opportunity to move into the Manchester United hot-seat if ten Hag is not looking safe in his position and there is an increasing possibility of him being ousted.

INEOS like him

“GMS sources previously revealed that Southgate already has a strong relationship with INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford. GMS sources have also been told that Southgate has set his sights on taking charge of a leading Premier League club after enjoying relative success at the England helm.

“In a potential blow for Everton, GMS sources understand that Southgate’s interest in succeeding Dyche would depend on the potential of more attractive Premier League opportunities opening up, and getting involved in a relegation battle does not align with his ambitions after the Toffees have failed to pick up any wins so far this season.”

Southgate’s lack of club experience and his inability to get over the line cannot be ignored and INEOS certainly can do much better if at all a decision has to be taken.

For now, Ten Hag still retains most of the fanbase’s backing and but results will need to improve and fast or else INEOS might just pull the plug on the Ten Hag era.
