Santiago Gimenez has admitted that he is not going through a great moment in terms of personal form, but spoke very highly of AC Milan.
Gimenez was the statement signing of the winter transfer window not just for Milan but perhaps in the entirety of Serie A. It was a sign that the Rossoneri were serious about a comeback in the top four race and a run deep in the Champions League.
However, Milan were instead knocked out of Europe by his old club Feyenoord and are six points back from fourth place. Not only that, but after a red hot start from the Mexican striker, he has not scored a goal in exactly one month.
Some, like Alessandro Costacurta, are concerned about the €32m investment, but the fact is he remains the club’s future in that position. Gimenez spoke to Azteca Deportes TV while away with his national team and spoke about his experience at Milan so far.
What is it like at Milan?
“When I arrived at the Rossoneri I understood the greatness of the club, but I already felt it from the outside. From the inside you feel it twice as much. We are not living a great moment but they welcomed me in the best possible way.
“I am living a dream, I want to be an example to make people understand that with God everything is possible. I live in the present, I enjoy every second. The first month was difficult, there were so many changes. Everything was new. I’m slowly adapting. My wife helped me a lot, so I can focus more on football.”
You will compete with Raul Jimenez for a starting spot…
“Competition is always good, I’ve always said that, even when you watched Messi and Cristiano. One would score two goals and the other would score three the next day. That’s the healthy competition that should exist.
“I admire Raúl as a striker and as a role model. I’ve followed him since I was a kid, and I think he’s a great striker. I hope that together we can contribute to the national team as we have been doing.”
Does competition drive you to be better?
“I enjoy it. Competition makes you perform better. We want to contribute to the national team… and what could be better than several forwards being in great form, which is essential because we all want to play and we all want to be in the starting XI, but in the end it’s the coach’s decision and all we can do is work.”
