Having arrived from Germany, Hansi Flick was a brave new pick for Barcelona. Despite being a proven and tested coach, he was unlike what the Catalan club is used to. Bringing in the more intense German philosophies with him, he has managed to reimagine this Barcelona side with some new tactical adjustments.

Originally, Flick seemed to like relying a lot on his fixed double pivot formation, one that would see two defensive midfielders operate side by side to give security to the backline and help in providing verticality to the ball progression. However, it seems now that the Barcelona coach is more open to making some rather bold tactical adjustments.

Normally quite strict about the kind of formation and football that his team plays, it now seems as if he is more open to testing out new waters in order to add some versatility and depth to his team’s tactical and technical play. As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the last few outings have shown this as well.

Against Real Betis in the Copa del Rey, for instance, Flick decided to make use of a false 9 formation. With Dani Olmo operating as the main central forward, one that would enable his wingers to thrive, the formation allowed Barcelona to play some of the most fluid football that they have showcased in recent weeks.

Then, against SL Benfica in the UEFA Champions League, Flick was quick to make adjustments to his setup and players once Barça began to trail in Lisbon. Setting up a three centre-back formation, one that was possible after bringing on Eric Garcia, it allowed Barcelona to make a massive comeback and win the entire game.

Now, moving forward, the upcoming game against Valencia in La Liga could be a good assessment for Hansi Flick yet again. While the coach could opt for some rotations as well, the team will likely consist of mainly regular starters given that Barcelona want to regain some much-needed momentum in La Liga.
