Since taking over as manager at FC Barcelona, Hansi Flick has done a brilliant job, turning a team that did not win any trophies last season into a contender for a potential treble, while already leading them to the Spanish Super Cup triumph.

Indeed, Barcelona are currently the leaders in La Liga, are in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, and made it through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League earlier this week and are favourites to go all the way.

One step away from Xavi’s record

Now, as reported by AS, Flick is just one match away from equalling Xavi Hernandez’s best unbeaten run as Barcelona manager.

The German coach has led his team to 17 consecutive matches without defeat. If Barcelona avoid losing against Atletico Madrid on Sunday at the Metropolitano, he will reach 18 games unbeaten, matching Xavi’s record from the 2022/23 season.

The Blaugrana have yet to lose in 2025, boasting an impressive record of 14 wins and three draws, scoring 54 goals and conceding just 17 during this streak Their last defeat came against Atletico Madrid at Montjuïc (1-2) on 21 December.

Since then, they have gone unbeaten, overcoming teams across multiple competitions. In the Copa del Rey, they defeated Barbastro (0-4) and Real Betis (5-1). In the Supercopa, they beat Athletic Club (0-2) and Real Madrid (2-5).

In La Liga, they drew with Getafe (1-1) but recorded wins over Valencia (7-1), Sevilla (1-4), Rayo Vallecano (1-0), Las Palmas (0-2), Alaves (1-0), and Real Sociedad (4-0).

Their Champions League campaign included a dramatic 4-5 victory over Benfica and a 2-2 draw with Atalanta, while they knocked the Portuguese outfit out in the Round of 16 (0-1 and 3-1).

Xavi’s 18-game unbeaten streak in 2022/23

Xavi’s own record run began on 29 October 2022, with a 1-0 victory over Valencia at Mestalla, and ended on 23 February 2023, when Barcelona lost 2-1 at Old Trafford to Manchester United, crashing out of the Europa League.

During that period, the team won 15 matches and drew three, pulling ahead of Real Madrid in the La Liga title race. In total, Xavi’s team scored 37 goals and conceded 13 during the run.

While Flick and Xavi’s records are impressive, they fall far short of the longest unbeaten run in the club’s history.

Luis Enrique holds that record, going an incredible 39 matches without defeat in the 2015/16 season. His team won 32 games, drew seven, scored 122 goals, and conceded just 23.

Next in line is Ernesto Valverde, who went 29 matches unbeaten in the 2017/18 season. Pep Guardiola follows closely with a 28-game streak in 2010/11.

If Flick avoids defeat against Atletico, he will then set his sights on matching Tata Martino’s 20-game unbeaten run in 2013/14.
