FC Barcelona are set to remain as the La Liga leaders for another week as they were able to get the full three points from their last match against Las Palmas.
Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres scored the two goals to ensure the Catalans’ lead in a tight La Liga race after Atletico Madrid had temporarily taken the first place after their 3-0 victory over Valencia.
After winning this match in the Canary Islands, Hansi Flick talked to the press, and his most notable statements have been recorded by SPORT.
The German tactician made it clear after the game that while he was happy with the win, there was still a lot of room for improvement in the team:
“These kinds of matches are normal. They leave us very tired, but we are happy. We are still at the top of the table, and that is what matters.
But we want to improve and be a better team. We have to improve after this match—these types of games leave us exhausted but satisfied. Staying at the top of the table is good, but we want to get better and become a stronger team. We have a lot to improve after this game.”
The Barcelona coach highlighted how the team talk at half-time was important in getting a win in this game:
“I wasn’t happy in the first half. But at halftime, we showed them what we could do better. We talked about the first 45 minutes and what we needed to improve. That’s what’s important. The players did well; they’re not happy with the performance, but they are with the three points.”
Flick also expressed his happiness for the two goalscorers on the night, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres:
“Olmo didn’t play because he was injured. It’s very important to give minutes for adaptation and confidence. And today was the right moment. We’re very happy for his goal; it was a great moment for him. We’re also happy for ‘Ferri’ (Ferran), who is scoring a lot and making an impact coming off the bench.”
The German trainer hinted at his lack of satisfaction with some aspects of his team’s performance on the night:
“I think that five or ten percent always depends on ball control. I don’t think we played as we would have liked in the first half. This goal is good for Olmo. It’s an important and positive goal.”
Further commenting on the improvements needed, the Barcelona head coach highlighted:
“The first goal was very important. But we were all focused on defense, which is very good; we have learned a lot from this. However, in the end, we missed a lot due to positioning and passing mistakes. We need to improve a lot after this match.”
Flick showed his satisfaction with the level at which all the four Blaugrana centre-backs are playing at the moment:
“Everyone shows responsibility in defense. We have four center-backs, and all four are at a great level, just like the full-backs.”
Lastly, the German tactician also praised Pedri, who had yet another very good game but was subbed out early:
“Pedri is incredible. I wanted to give him a rest, but you always need him in the game. However, we took him off because we have an important match on Tuesday.”
Hopefully, Flick will be able to work on the shortcomings of his team that he identified in this presser in the coming days, as Barcelona have a very difficult run of games coming ahead as the Copa del Rey semi-finals and the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 ties will be played in the coming weeks.
