How much QPR earned from the sale of Ebere Eze in 2020 and what signings they've made since

Eberechi Eze was an exciting emerging talent at QPR when he was sold to Crystal Palace in the 2020 summer transfer window.

The winger spent three seasons in the Hoops’ first team squad, first breaking into the side during the 2017-18 campaign.

The 26-year-old made 104 league appearances in that time, contributing 20 goals and 11 assists, helping the team come 16th, 19th and 13th in the Championship table.

However, his strong performances naturally drew the attention of Premier League clubs, leading to a move to Selhurst Park after an impressive 14-goal season with QPR.

Here we look at how much the London outfit actually sold Eze for, and what they’ve done with that money in the years since…

Ebere Eze’s Crystal Palace fee

It was reported in September 2020 by the BBC that Crystal Palace agreed a £19.5 million deal to sign the winger.

Eze’s sale is the most QPR have ever made in the transfer market from a single player departure.

It is significantly higher than the number two figure, which is an honour given to Christopher Samba.

It was reported in July 2013 by the BBC that the defender departed Loftus Road in a deal worth £12 million, making the switch to Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

The next best is Loic Remy, with the forward being sold in the 2014 summer transfer window in a deal worth £10.5 million, via the BBC.

QPR’s time in the Championship has seen them struggle to create the level of star that could earn the club such significant fees, particularly when rivals have been able to command figures over £20 million on a regular basis in recent years.

The likes of Adam Wharton, Viktor Gyokeres and Alex Scott have all been sold in the last few transfer windows for fees greater than Eze’s.

QPR’s transfer spending

The signings of Rob Dickie, Lyndon Dykes and Macauley Bonne were all made during the 2020/21 campaign in which Eze was sold.

George Thomas and Albert Adomah also arrived as free agents, as the team went on to finish ninth in the Championship table, nine points adrift of the top six.

QPR didn’t particularly splash the cash in the following campaign either, with resources proving limited even with the major sale of Eze.

Two permanent signings were made, including Andre Dozzell and Stefan Johansen, but neither came close to breaking any kind of spending records.

Instead, free agents and loan deals were relied upon, with the likes of Jordan Archer, Moses Odubajo and Jimmy Dunne arriving, as well as the return of Charlie Austin.

The 2022/23 campaign saw QPR continue to act frugally in the transfer market, with not a single transfer fee paid to bring a new player into the club.

Further free agent signings were instead completed in order to improve the team after they had come 11th in the Championship.

However, the permanent arrivals of the likes of Leon Balogun, Jake Clarke-Salter and Kenneth Paal saw the London outfit only finish 20th in the second division table.

It wasn’t until the 2024 summer window that the Hoops paid a fee for a player again, bringing Nicolas Madsen, Zan Celar, Jonathan Varane, Esquerdinha and Daniel Bennie into the club.

The arrival of Madsen in a deal worth £2 million, per West London Sport, proved the most expensive of these signings, highlighting that there still isn't a lot of money to spend at Loftus Road in the years since Eze's departure.
