West Bromwich Albion have a difficult decision to make in the summer regarding the future of John Swift.

The 29-year-old joined the Baggies in 2022 from Reading on a free transfer and in his first season, was the midfielder at his electric best. In total, he managed seven goals and ten assists in all competitions, but his contributions have diminished somewhat since then.

The start of this season proved particularly challenging for him, as he was frequently left out of Carlos Corberán’s side. However, following the Spaniard’s departure to Valencia and the subsequent appointment of Tony Mowbray, he has been reintegrated into the squad.

Even so, his contract is set to expire this summer, and Mowbray - alongside the West Brom hierarchy - faces a big decision. Last month, the head coach confirmed that no new deal had been discussed, and there have been no updates since.

Having arrived on a free transfer, Albion have only had to cover Swift’s wages – but just how much have they paid the midfielder, and does his current salary justify a new deal?

John Swift's West Brom wages

According to Capology's wage estimation system, Swift was actually on a higher wage at Reading (£25,000 per week) than at West Brom (£22,500 per week).

He has spent all three years on the same wage, earning £1.17 million annually. By the time his contract expires this summer, he will have earned a total of £3.51 million.

When compared to the rest of the Albion squad, the 29-year-old ranks among the higher earners at The Hawthorns. Excluding loanees Mason Holgate and Adam Armstrong, Swift is the fourth-highest earner, with only Daryl Dike, Jed Wallace and Darnell Furlong ahead of him.

Meanwhile, the average weekly wage of an Albion player stands at £16,259, meaning the midfielder earns just over £6,000 per week above that average.

John Swift could be worth a new contract

The question Tony Mowbray and the club’s hierarchy must now consider is whether Swift merits a new contract this summer.

Two years ago, following a season in which he contributed to 17 goals, few would have questioned his value - both in terms of performance and wage. However, that view may well have shifted.

This season, he has started just 19 of his 35 Championship appearances, with his 1,696 minutes on the pitch falling short of the heavy involvement seen in previous campaigns. That said, Swift remains an outstanding footballer and, at 29, should technically be entering his peak years.

When he has featured, he’s continued to make a notable impact. His per-90 passing statistics place him among the top 20% of midfielders in the division. He averages 59.5 successful passes per match - the highest figure in the league - and creates 1.8 chances per game, underlining the creative spark he brings to the Baggies.

There will be those who question whether he warrants a top-tier wage at the club, but if he maintains this level of output, he certainly makes a strong case.

If Albion deem £22,500 per week too steep, then he may well depart this summer. But Swift is undeniably one of the Championship’s finest midfielders - and would strengthen any side he joins.
