Enzo Maresca has revealed what he feels Enzo Fernandez can do better despite the midfielder’s upturn in form this season.
The Blues started the season brilliantly, but their current five game winless run has seen them slip out of the top four and into a real battle to qualify for the Champions League.
Chelsea are only a point behind Newcastle in fourth, but this run of form couldn’t have come at a much worse time, and the Blues could kick off against Wolves on Monday night as low as seventh in the table.
Chelsea might be struggling at this moment in time, but Maresca has done a good job and a number of players have improved this season.
Marc Cucurella, Nicolas Jackson and Moises Caicedo fall into that category as does Fernandez, who is now looking like the player he was when he won the World Cup in Argentina in 2022.
The 24-year-old arrived for a then British record of £106m from Benfica in January 2023 and impressed in his first six months, although he struggled last season under Mauricio Pochettino and played the majority of the season with a hernia issue.
Fernandez has shown huge signs of improvement this season.
Fernandez initially struggled this season and lost his place in the side in October to Romeo Laiva for four matches, and he’s revealed how Maresca has helped him this season.
However, since retuning after the November international break he’s been in brilliant form and started every league game, scoring a number of important goals.
Maresca was asked about Fernandez’s improvement in form and the Italian revealed what he felt it was down to.
“He is understanding the game much better compared to at the beginning of the season,” he told his pre-match press conference.

“It is something normal when you start a new process because in the way we want him to play, it is a bit different to what he’s done in the past; not only here but two years ago, three years ago when he was in Portugal and Argentina.
“We were sure he was going to score goals, give assists and create chances. I think being even more clinical, he could score three or four more goals with three or four more chances. But we have no doubt that we are going to be there soon with Enzo and help the team.”
