Germany and Italy locked horns at the Signal Iduna Park in the second leg of the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals. Die Mannschaft entered the contest with a one-goal advantage from the first leg, and they thought they put the match to bed by taking a 3-0 lead at half-time. However, the Azzurri managed to pull off a sensational comeback away from home to level the score on the night, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the script. So here are our player ratings for Italy who secured a 3-3 draw against Germany but still lost 4-5 on aggregate.
Gianluigi Donnarumma – 6
A mixed bag for the Italy captain who pulled off a series of superb saves, but was outwitted by Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala who combined to score Germany’s second from a swift corner kick while the big goalkeeper was chatting with his eyes completely off the ball.
Federico Gatti – 5
The Juventus defender got himself booked early on after failing to properly deal with Musiala. A shaky display overall and it only lasted 45 minutes.
Alessandro Buongiorno – 6
The former Torino defender found himself forced to commit the foul that gave the home side the opener, but still made a series of important interventions.
Alessandro Bastoni – 5.5
The Inter stalwart was the culprit on the third goal for Germany as he gave the ball away cheaply. It certainly wasn’t his best outing.
Giovanni Di Lorenzo – 6
The Napoli captain ran his socks off down the right flank from start to finish. He was committed at the back and thought he had won the visitors a spot-kick but it was overturned following a long VAR review.
Nicolò Barella – 6
A hardworking display from the Sardinian who never gives up, but still fell well below his breathtaking displays for Inter.
Samuele Ricci – 5.5
Not a bad display from the Torino star, but did little to lock himself a starting berth, even though Nicolo Rovella didn’t fare much better in the first leg.
Sandro Tonali – 5.5
The Newcastle star was easily the best Italy player at San Siro, but seemed to be operating at a significantly lower pace this time.
Destiny Udogie – 6
An improved display from the Spurs man, but still didn’t find the acres of space he likes to operate in.
Daniel Maldini – 5.5
It just felt that the stage was too big for the Atalanta attacking midfielder who’s still somewhat raw. Misplaced a few passes and couldn’t hit the target from a promising volley.
Moise Kean – 8
The Fiorentina bomber dragged Italy back to the contest with a fabulous second-half brace. Never gave up a yard for the opposition.
Matteo Politano – 5.5
The Napoli added a spark on the right wing, but scuffed his final touch on a few occasions.
Davide Frattesi – 6
The Inter man didn’t exactly steal the limelight, but the midfield looked much more composed and dynamic following his entry
Giacomo Raspadori – 7
An inspiring cameo from the versatile attacker who held his own against the German defences. Provided the assist for Kean’s second and caused havoc in the final third on several occasions. Kept his cool to score the equalizer from the spot.
