Liverpool sit atop the Premier League table, six points above Arsenal and with an outstanding game. They are being tipped to finish the season as champions in only the first campaign under new manager Arne Slot.

The Dutchman has filled Jurgen Klopp’s boots seamlessly and could guide Liverpool to only their second Premier League title.

They have looked imperious, beating Leicester City 3-1 in their last outing following a 6-3 mullering of Tottenham Hotspur in north London. The Reds are unbeaten in 22 games since their shock loss to Nottingham Forest.

However, the players are keeping themselves grounded and have refused to accept the tag of favourites for the Premier League title. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker gave his view on their ambitions.

Alisson said (via The Guardian) on winning the Premier League: “It’s our goal. It is our target. At this point, we cannot just start to look to the points and see how it goes.

“We have to really focus on the next opponent that we have in front of us. That’s the mentality that we need and are having at the moment. We know how the Premier League can change so quickly in two games.”

Liverpool are being cautious. More than any other team in the Premier League, they know what it means to lose their grip on the title in the final days of the season.

The Merseysiders famously clinched 97 points in 2018/19 and were still pipped to the title by Manchester City. They can take confidence in City’s abysmal form, but they must be wary.

In 2013/14, they looked on their way to the title before a series of catastrophic events led to them missing out. Slot and Alisson are right to be cautious, but there is a quiet confidence about the way they play.

Liverpool look ready to hold on to first position till May, and there doesn’t seem to be a worthy challenger in the division this term.
