Jack Wilshere’s spell as Arsenal’s u18 head coach came to a whirlwind conclusion last month, as the opportunity to work as a first-team coach at Norwich City arose.

Wilshere’s departure from Arsenal was confirmed on Wednesday, October 23rd, and he started his new role in Norwich on Thursday, October 24th.

That quick turnaround didn’t leave much time for goodbyes, so Wilshere took the current international break as an opportunity to send a message to his former club and the fans.

“Football is crazy,” Wilshere wrote. “Things can change quick and I haven’t had the chance to thank everyone at the Arsenal Academy for the last 2 years.

“Everyone knows Arsenal is my club and leaving is never easy, especially when you care so much about the club, the staff and most importantly the players.

“When I retired from football I took the step into coaching, [Arsenal] gave me the opportunity to take my first role as a head coach, I learnt so much!

“But I couldn’t have done it without the help and support of the staff, we shared some tough moments but also some amazing memories that gave me feelings I had never experienced in the game.

“Arsenal remains in my blood and I will be watching every game as a fan. I hope we see some more young players from the Academy taking that step to the first team! Adam Birchall, good luck my friend! Until we meet again.”

Arsenal opted for an internal promotion to replace Wilshere, with Adam Birchall taking on the u18 head coach job. Birchall had been working as Wilshere’s assistant before the former midfielder’s departure.

Wilshere clearly still wants the best for his old club, but the chance to step into senior management (albeit as an assistant) was evidently too tempting to refuse.

At 32 years old, Wilshere is still very early in his coaching journey, so even an assistant manager job puts him ahead of most of his peers. We wish him all the best in East Anglia.
