Jadon Sancho’s Borussia Dortmund return seems unlikely

As reported earlier this week, rumors have been stirring about a potential return of Jadon Sancho to Borussia Dortmund. Sancho has had an inconsistent loan at Chelsea FC from Manchester United this season, and there was serious consideration that Chelsea was considering paying a penalty fee in order to send Sancho back to Manchester. These rumors were then bolstered by Jadon Sancho asserting his desire to return to Germany and, more importantly, Borussia Dortmund.

Today, however, journalist Florian Plettenberg is reporting that a transfer for Jadon Sancho is not currently a topic in Dortmund. BVB has reasonable wingers in Karim Adeyemi, Maxi Beier, and Jamie Gittens at the moment. At the same time, other areas of the squad need more immediate attention, even with the likely sale of Jamie Gittens this summer.

Football Insider is also reporting that Chelsea FC is preparing to honor their buy obligation and pay out the 25 million euros owed to Manchester United to secure Sancho on a permanent basis. The deal seems inevitable unless Chelsea fails to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. With nine matches to play, Chelsea is in fourth place in the English Premier League, five points behind third and five points ahead of tenth. Fourth place is required for Champions League qualification.

While the transfer seems unlikely, the speculation is sure to continue, especially as Jadon Sancho continues to show his love and support for Borussia Dortmund online. While I don’t rate Sancho as high a player as I once did, I still think his return could benefit BVB. Never underestimate a player who exhibits a high level of pride for their badge. Dortmund is in a bit of an identity crisis, but Sancho could help calm those waters. But for now, it seems like he’s staying in England.
