Viktor Gyokeres is expected to be one of the summer’s major transfer sagas – and Manchester United could well be among the mix.

The Sporting Lisbon talisman is attracting widespread interest across Europe after yet another prolific goalscoring season on all fronts, notching an unfathomable 52 goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions. This includes 38 Liga Portugal goals and six in the Champions League.

27 of those contributions came under Ruben Amorim, who departed his native country for England when INEOS came knocking last October. He saw out the remainder of the month with Sporting before succeeding Erik ten Hag as United’s head coach.

Since making the move to Old Trafford, it’s thought Amorim, in an ideal world, would reunite with Gyokeres in hopes of finally putting a definitive end to the side’s longstanding woes in front of goal.

Along with the Reds, their top-flight rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have also established their desire to hash out a deal for the Swedish international, with all three clubs planning to enter the market for a world-class No.9 when the window opens in June.

Despite valuing him closer to the £90 million mark, Sporting would reportedly allow their star man to leave for a cut-price fee of £55m – a price tag which his suitors will likely be more than happy to shell out, given his numbers in recent seasons.

Champions League football crucial for Gyokeres

However, it won’t only take a strong personal connection with Amorim and an agreement to meet Sporting’s demands if United are to reign victoriously in their pursuit.

Christopher Michel has assured that the forward has his sights set on playing Champions League football in 2025/2026, which Amorim can only offer if United win the Europa League come May 21. That is indeed the only way the Red Devils have a ‘realistic chance’ of pipping other teams to his signature.
