Former Roma goalkeeper reflected on his relationship with Claudio Ranieri who coached during his spell in the Italian capital.
In an interview with Il Tempo, Sergio previewed the Derby della Capitale and discussedd Ranieri’s impact.
“Ranieri taught me to enjoy football more. He puts his heart and soul into it, it’s very nice to work with him,” he said.
“Another positive thing for me, even if others don’t think so, is that he speaks clearly to your face. He’s not a politician in football, he does what he has to do. I have great respect for Ranieri.”
“Roma’s chances for Top 4? Roma is doing well, they come from many consecutive useful results. If they continue like this, they can go to the Champions League.”
“Roma changed my life,” he added. “When I arrived at 26, I had won two championships in Brazil and played with great players. However, entering a locker room with people like Totti, Panucci and Montella is another level.”
“Today they know me all over the world because I wore this shirt. Then, this city gave me so much, because my children were born there and I made so many friends. I am grateful for what I experienced.”
“Svilar? He is doing very well, he has managed to maintain a high level and it was not a given. Technically I like him, he is explosive and reactive. As a young player he had already done important things, then he had a period where he played less. Now, he is managing to express his value. I am happy for him and I hope he can stay in Rome for a long time.”
“Who is favored for the derby? Roma comes from a more consistent path, but in these games it doesn’t matter. In the city you can breathe the derby air all week. I hope Roma can win.”
