The Italian press have not looked favourably on Juventus or coach Thiago Motta after the humiliating 0-4 loss at home against Atalanta in Serie A on Sunday evening, as some papers claim that the tactician is now at serious risk of losing his job, even if the Old Lady qualify for the Champions League.

Juventus suffered their heaviest defeat of the season against Atalanta on Sunday: The worst Bianconeri home defeat in 58 years. It was only the third time in the 21st century that Juve have lost by a four-goal margin, at home or away.

Sunday’s defeat also means that Juve are now six points behind third-placed Atalanta again, and could be overtaken by Lazio by the end of the round, as the Biancocelesti sit two points behind them ahead of their game against Udinese on Monday night.

Juventus are also out of the Champions League after a poor defeat against PSV, who went on to lose 7-1 at home to an injury-hit Arsenal in the following round, are out of the Coppa Italia after a quarter-final defeat by underdogs Empoli, and were beaten in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final by Milan in Sergio Conceicao’s first game in charge.

With top four the only thing left to play for this season, La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that Motta is now at a genuine risk of losing his job by the end of the season, even if he and the team qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Local outlet Tuttosport labelled Juventus’s defeat a ‘disaster’, claiming that the Bianconeri ‘failed’ their exam against Gian Piero Gasperini’s side. They feel that a top four finish is a positive for Juve’s budget, but not a success in terms of their sporting ambitions.

Corriere dello Sport, meanwhile, claim that there has been ‘no progress’ at Juventus under Thiago Motta so far, and point to a number of ‘disappointing’ first-team players, including Dusan Vlahovic, Teun Koopmeiners, Nico Gonzalez, Kenan Yildiz and Andrea Cambiaso.
