Lazio winger Gustav Isaksen believes his team was the better side overall despite falling short at the hands of Inter Milan.
Th Biancocelesti were hoping to avenge their shocking 0-6 defeat against the reigning Italian champions in December by prevailing in the Coppa Italia quarter-final contest on Tuesday night. Marco Baroni’s men looked dangerous in the early going, but failed to capitalise on their chances.
On the other hand, Marko Arnautovic opened the scoring for the Nerazzurri with their first shot on target as his astonishing volley left Christos Mandas stranded. Hakan Calhanoglu sealed the win with a second goal from the spot after the break.
But in his post-match press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Isaksen insists Lazio deserved a better result after delivering a superior display to Inter’s, but urges his teammates to raise their level to make up for Taty Castellanos’ noticeable absence.
We must not look at individual results but at the path taken so far which is good. We will be ready. We are angry after the defeat, as we played much better than Inter. Starting tomorrow we will work at Formello to improve. It is not about the goals that do not arrive. Taty is an important player for us, but we all have to raise the level to help the attackers score. We have missed out on several opportunities so we need to do more. Inter are a great team anyway. We are aware that we have to improve.
Finally, Isaksen insists he and his teammates weren’t star-struck by playing at San Siro since they’re used to plying their trade at a grand stadium.
In my opinion, Lazio had personality tonight, we played much better than Inter. The Olimpico is also a great stadium, not just San Siro, so this has nothing to do with it.
