Bayer Leverkusen set new Bundesliga unbeaten away record

Bayer Leverkusen have set a new record for the longest unbeaten away streak in Bundesliga history following their 2-2 draw in Mainz on Saturday afternoon - they have now gone 34 matches undefeated away from the BayArena.

Last year's champions may have faltered in their bid to retain their Bundesliga title following Bayern Munich's 3-3 draw at RB Leipzig and their own draw on Matchday 32, but they have still found a way to write more history this campaign.

Their 2-2 draw in Mainz on the final day of the season, with Czech goal machine Patrik Schick scoring twice, means that Leverkusen have gone a second consecutive campaign unbeaten on the road in the German top flight.

The previous sole owners of the record were Bayern, who did not lose a single away Bundesliga game between Matchday 32 of the 2011/12 term and Matchday 27 in 2013/14.

Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola both contributed to that streak, but Xabi Alonso has been in charge for the entirety of Leverkusen's stellar away-day run, meaning he leads the way on his own, in terms of the unbeaten away record amongst coaches.

The last time Leverkusen were beaten in unfamiliar surroundings was on the final day of the 2022/23 term, when they were brushed aside 3-0 by Bochum.
